There are 2 types of commonly heard lorry driving license: GDL (Goods Delivery License) and E-License. Both are right in our country, but inaccurate.
Besides that, you may also heard that driver with GDL license can drive small lorry but not big lorry. Some will tell that they can drives small lorry with 21 feet body but big lorry with 21 feet body is not allowed. It is true at certain extend, but... also inaccurate. How to define the meaning of small or big?
Purchase a lorry according to inaccurate information will caused wrong decision. Once the sizes and length are wrong, you will needs to pay higher operation cost to handle the lorry. Either arrange your driver to get suitable license or hire addition driver to operate the lorry. If you are the driver, you will needs to pay addition money and time to get the correct license.
Accurate information is: There are 2 types of license, CDL ( Competence Driving License) and GDL ( Goods Delivery License ).
Anything related to the ability to drive a vehicles, whether it is motor, car, van or trucks... is CDL. There are different qualification of CDL license which is stated behind your Lesen Memandu:
CDL with Kelas D qualification, which we all have to drive passenger car, is driving license to drive vehicle with Kerb Weight (BTM, Berat Tanpa Muatan) less than 3500KG.
GDL is Goods Delivery license. No matter what sizes or length of vehicle is used to deliver goods...be it motor, car, van or lorry, all needs to operate by driver with valid GDL license. Drivers with GDL license need to submit body checkup report to JPJ as a prove that they are healthy to bear the duty and responsible of goods delivery job. If driver delivery goods by any vehicle ( motor, car etc. ) without having a valid GDL license, legal action will be taken against them by related governance department. If the vehicles is registered under Sdn Bhd, company's directors will need to bear correlated responsible on this offenses.
Hence, CDL (Kelas D,E)and GDL are different. CDL is license to prove one's driving ability on vehicle with different Kerb Weight. GDL is license for goods delivery service.
GDL license have no direct influence on what type of trucks can be drive by a driver, but with indirect linkage because GDL license is issued according to the qualification of CDL. For example, the GDL shown below ( right ) is issued according to qualification of CDL, Kelas D (left). So she can drive a vehicle with Kerb Weight (BTM) below 3500KG. If she needs to drive vehicle with KW(BTM) higher than 3500KG or 7500KG, she needs to get Kelas E qualification on her CDL license. Once she get it, her GDL will stated vehicles with KW (BTM) exceed 7500KG is drivable.
So the sizes of trucks that a driver can drive is related to their qualification of CDL license. Kelas D, can drive trucks with KW (BTM) below 3500KG. Kelas E, can drive trucks with KW ( BTM) exceed 7500KG. On the others hand, when you buy a trucks with KW (BTM) more than 7500KG, you must ensure the driver have CDL with Kelas E qualification.
Beside Kelas E, there are Kelas E2 (KW below 500KG) , and E1 ( KW below 7500KG). But these are not popular so we don't discuss it in this articles.
For the relation between KW (BTM) and body length, we will discuss in future.
